How to read the table

$/kWh is the headline value metric for residential storage. Below $350/kWh is excellent value (DIY rack-mount LFP territory: EG4, Pytes, Pylontech US/Force lines). $350-600/kWh is the typical range for installer-grade batteries that pair with major hybrid inverters (BYD, Sungrow, Huawei). Above $600/kWh you're paying for integrated brand systems (Tesla Powerwall 3, Anker Solix X1) where battery + inverter + management ship as one box. We sort by this column by default.

Capacity (kWh) is the total nameplate capacity. Most modern LFP batteries publish 100% usable capacity (capacity_total == capacity_usable); some legacy NMC units used 80% DoD limits and published the lower number as “usable.” Sizing for residential typically lands between 5-15 kWh per household — enough for an evening peak plus an overnight ride-through to the next solar morning, without paying for daily idle capacity.

Power out (kW) is the continuous AC power the battery can sustain, paired with its inverter. This is what determines whether the battery can actually run your loads during an outage. Running a 9 kW air-source heat pump compressor needs at least 9 kW continuous; an induction cooktop on full burn pulls 7-11 kW briefly. Tesla Powerwall 3 (11.5 kW), BYD HVM stacks (9-15 kW depending on stack size) and Sungrow SBR (5-15 kW depending on stack) are the standouts here.

Chemistry matters mostly for cycle life and calendar life. LiFePO4 (LFP) is the mainstream choice for residential as of 2023 onwards: 4000-7000 cycles to 80% capacity, 10-15 year warranty support, far better thermal stability than NMC. NMC appears on a few legacy units (Tesla Powerwall 2 most notably) — slightly higher energy density per kg but less safe and shorter calendar life. Every new launch since 2023 is LFP.

Cycles is the manufacturer-stated cycle count to 80% remaining capacity. 6000 cycles at one daily cycle = 16+ years of daily use before noticeable degradation. For typical residential duty (one full cycle per day or less), warranty years is the constraint, not cycle life.

Pairing with inverters

Most home batteries listed here are DC-coupled — they need a hybrid inverter to handle AC conversion + grid sync. The exceptions are Tesla Powerwall 3 and Anker Solix X1, which integrate inverter and battery in one cabinet (AC-coupled to the panel; no separate hybrid inverter required). For DC-coupled systems, key compatibility constraints:

  • BYD Battery-Box HVS/HVM: Pairs with Sungrow SH-RT, Solis S5/S6 EH1P, Goodwe ET, KOSTAL Plenticore, SMA Sunny Boy Storage and a dozen more. Most-supported HV battery in EU residential.
  • Pylontech US3000C/US5000: 48V LV — pairs with Victron MultiPlus, EG4 6000XP, GivEnergy AC3, SolaX X3-Hybrid (with adapter), Goodwe LV.
  • Sungrow SBR: Designed for Sungrow SH-RT hybrid inverter, also works with several CAN-bus-compatible third parties.
  • Huawei LUNA2000: Locked to Huawei SUN2000 hybrid inverters via FusionHome system requirements.
  • Goodwe Lynx Home F/U: Goodwe ET hybrid inverters only.
  • Fox ESS HV/LV: Fox ESS H1/H3-Pro hybrid inverters.
